The Sheriff relies on a well-trained and regulated Reserve Deputy Patrol Division to serve the residents of Hillsdale County in areas of security, special events, community activities and backup to certified police officers. While Reserve Patrol Deputies are not certified police officers, they function with the law enforcement authority extended to them as Special Deputy Sheriffs.
The Reserve Patrol Division collectively puts in more than 1,000 hours of volunteer time each year. The division must complete comprehensive training which focuses on defensive tactics training, firearms training, legal training, traffic enforcement techniques, radio communications, law enforcement ethics and other important skills. The success of many community outreach programs is a direct result of the dedication of this division.
